Surveyors at Atlantic58 recently recorded a record-breaking peat depth of 7.35 m whilst surveying for a proposed peatland restoration project by Loch Fasgro near Carloway for Scottish Water. Staff from NatureScot’s PeatlandACTION confirmed that the peat depth recorded was the highest peat depth (officially) recorded for the Isle of Lewis. Local PeatlandACTION officer Ben Inglis-Grant joined Atlantic58 staff in the field to witness the peat probing of the record depth, along with Malcom Walker, Catchment Manager from Scottish Water.

The Scottish Water peatland restoration project, in partnership with CalMax Construction Limited, aims to restore the peatlands around Loch Fasgro as part of catchment management measures and wider biodiversity enhancement commitments. Peatland Restoration can play a vital role in mitigating climate change, increasing biodiversity, minimising flood risk, and enhancing water quality. Other benefits can include preserving cultural heritage, creating recreational opportunities, and providing work within the local community.
